The Society maintains a series of hard copy documents in files sorted by surname. They are referred to as the "Vertical Files" in reference to the type of file cabinets in which they are stored. You can browse an index of these surnames and associated files by clicking on the link above. Since these are unscanned documents, you will need to visit the library to access the files. These are only a subset of family information which the Society maintains. If your family name is not listed, you should use the digitized resources noted above.
Submitting a research request to the Historical Society is a smart way to tap into deep local knowledge and hard-to-find sources without spending weeks hunting on your own. Our volunteers work with original records, newspapers, photos, maps, and family files that aren’t always online, and they know how to connect the dots for Washington County and the surrounding region. Whether you’re tracing ancestors or investigating a house, church, business, or event, we’ll tailor a focused search to your questions and provide clear findings you can use, saving you time while opening doors to details and stories you might otherwise miss.
The Historical Society maintains an extensive digital collection of historical photographs, illustrations, maps, and documents. You can purchase digital copies for personal or approved commercial use. Search the online database, select an image, and follow the prompts to order. Owning a piece of our archival collection connects you to the region's rich heritage!
